Join us as an adult volunteer!

Over 20? Seeking a new challenge? Would you like to develop skills, leadership qualities and gain qualifications too?

Within the ATC there are a number of uniformed and non-uniformed roles for adults. All staff are volunteers, and each unit is led by Commissioned Officers from the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training Branch), and supported by Adult Warrant Officers, Adult SNCO’s and Civilian Instructors.

In addition to staff working with cadets directly, other people can help cadets in a support role. Each ATC squadron has a Civilian Committee which helps with fundraising and more. Many parents get involved and get a great deal of enjoyment and satisfaction.

Staff members are drawn from all backgrounds, and you could end up working alongside others with all sorts of skills and talents. No formal qualifications are needed to help assist Air Cadets to develop self-confidence, leadership and citizenship!

Are you officer or SNCO material?

We rely on our volunteers to help us operate as effectively as possible. Being well organised is an obvious must, ideally with good managerial and administrative skills, and an ability to listen to problems and deal with them tactfully and appropriately.

Really show your skills in these areas and you could end up taking on more responsibility and moving up through the ranks as an officer or senior non-commissioned officer (SNCO). Of course, first you have to join as a Civilian Instructor and then have selection interviews at Wing HQs and Regional HQs but we guide you through that…if you have the potential then we’ll spot it!

Adult Volunteer Training

You may not need any formal qualifications to join us as an Adult volunteer, but you could leave with plenty! It’s essential that our staff and volunteers are equipped with the knowledge, skills and experience to fulfill their wide range of duties; so we provide plenty of exciting courses that you can sign up for.

For Adult Volunteers, there’s a range of NVQ’s, leadership and outdoor training courses you can apply for; become one of our uniformed staff and your options get even wider!

Uniformed Staff Training

As a sergeant or officer in the Training Branch of the RAF Volunteer Reserve (RAF VR) (T), you can claim up to 28 days’ volunteer allowance per year and work your way up through the ranks in a similar manner to the RAF. You’ll also benefit from an exclusive selection of specialised training courses.

Most uniformed staff training takes place at our Adult Training Facility (ATF), located at Headquarters Air Cadets (HQAC) at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire
